The Five C's of Building Tribe: Code


Let's talk about CODE.


This brings me to another C – CrossFit. I don't know if you’ve ever had exposure to this particular tribe but they are a species onto themselves.

They talk in a language that only they understand: AMRAPS, burpees, WOD, and The Box. Now, The Box, and even burpees, are not what you think it is. These are all terms that denote the exercises, the container, what happens within this gym revolution that's happened worldwide.



Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, said they have to build a system that can withstand all the shiny objects along the way because if we don't, we will get distracted and our biggest challenge is all these opportunities that will be flying at us as we grow and we need to figure out what it is that we do. So 14,000 gyms worldwide – the next biggest brand is Planet Fitness with 1 400. They did this by not getting distracted by all the other stuff that they could be doing and just doing what they do best, which is to get people fit.


Code is about:

  • language - a language is formed internally

  • values - who are we? What do we stand for?

  • operating system - how we do things?


It is always good to be quite intentional about these things. In the Scaling Up community, we have a tool that we use called the job scorecard. It's a great way to regulate your engagement on values as an operating system to engage with your employees.
