MAX & MULLIGAN
In the sport of golf, a mulligan is an extra stroke allowed after a poor shot, not counted on the scorecard
Golfing protégé Max Myburgh is driven to be the very best, and reaches the heights of the game at an early age. His success fails to win him the love of his ambivalent father and only succeeds in alienating his protective older brother, before it is all ripped away from him.
Starting over as an ex sporting superstar is tough, and Max learns some hard lessons about humility, relationships and the people you surround yourself. Luckily he finds great mentors who guide his way, as he swops golf for the corporate ladder in the changing landscape that is South Africa in the 1990’s and the early 2000s.
Max grabs his second chance with both hands, and he quickly finds himself once again scaling the summit of business success. Set in the context of global sporting events such as the Golf, Cricket and Football World Cups hosted in South Africa, this is a story of doing business in our country. And how his moral compass will be tested to the max in the landscape of BEE, nepotism and graft.
No longer being able to take a long walk on the golf course, he finds a new passion: Trekking. Learning crucial lessons about himself and the world on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and the hidden cities of Peru, Max will acquire the greatest skills of all: How to live a principle-centred life, and the power of intentionality. And how connecting with nature at a crucial time can make all the difference.
Filled with relatable characters and set against the backdrop of Stellenbosch University, the Football World Cup and the unique social and business landscape that is South Africa, this story will resonate with anyone that has ever fallen down and had to start over. And the hard choices along the way.
